Issues in Western Shinto
I think I have a unique perspective as someone who is Japanese, bilingual, visits Japan regularly and started off more formal worship in the English-speaking community. Obviously, this is just my opinion!
I think the predominance of Konkokyo has led to confusion and misunderstandings about Jinja Shinto. Konkokyo is not nearly as popular in Japan, and is a New Religious Movement just like any other. It took years to undo the mistakes and misinformation learnt in the Way of Kami and People Discord server for myself, personally. I found I benefited from being able to read Japanese sources (shrine sites, academic sources, etc.) but most Western Shinto practitioners cannot. For the sake of the greater community, I think we need to reasses the presence of Konkokyo.
Speaking more specifically of the Discord server, I also was very disappointed by the amount of times racist behavior (specifically against Japanese people, including myself) went unaddressed. The majority of the moderation staff were, for the most part, more willing to let racists say what they wanted than listen to any criticisms. I probably was not the best communicator during that time, being younger and not sufficiently medicated, but I do stand by my assessment of the events being correct. The Way of Kami and People Discord serves as a major source of community and information for Western Shinto, and I firmly believe it is rotten to the core. I do not say this to try to direct attention to my own Discord, as I am by no means a perfect moderator myself, but to encourage people to find more sources and community outside of Discord entirely.
